After 90 Days on Gluten-Free Diet

Hey guys, I have been meaning to write on gluten/wheat free diet, but I wanted to make sure that I am on a gluten/wheat free diet long enough to talk about it. Here I am, after three months on being on a gluten/wheat free diet. 

What is ''Gluten'' anyways?

Gluten is a name of protein found in WHEAT, BARLEY, and RYE. It is what keeps the food in shape acting as glue. 

What is a ''Gluten Free'' diet and who is it for?

Gluten Free diet is when you don't eat anything that includes gluten. And, it should be led by those who have Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and ''wheat allergy''.

Celiac disease

Celiac disease is an auto immune disorder, in easy words, eating gluten foods can cause damage to the lining of small intestine to people who have the disease.  The intestine fails to absorb the nutrients. Symptoms of Celiac disease include chronic diarrhea, vomiting, chronic constipation, fatigue, irritability, decreased appetite, and failure to gain weight. Most people with Celiac disease are undiagnosed, and the symptoms vary from person to person, some people have mild while others have severe symptoms.

Gluten sensitivity/intolerance

Gluten sensitivity/intolerance is a condition that causes a person to react when eaten. It is diagnosed in people who experience symptoms after consuming gluten, but test negative for wheat allergy and celiac disease. Reactions include bloating, abdominal pain, fatigue, gas, brain fog, and depression.  

Are gluten sensitivity and wheat allergy the same thing?

No, people who have wheat allergy need to avoid everything that includes wheat. Wheat allergy should not be confused with gluten sensitivity.  If a person who has wheat allergy eats food that contains it, it can trigger an allergic reaction from mild symptoms (rashes, itching, hives, or swelling, sore throat) to severe symptoms (trouble breathing, wheezing, and loss of consciousness). Not all gluten free products are safe for people with wheat allergy. Some manufacturers use wheat that has had the gluten removed to make gluten free products.  Therefore, they are gluten free but not wheat free.  It is better to consume food that is labeled ''Wheat free''. However, people who have wheat allergy can possibly be allergic to other grains as well. So it is better/safer to avoid gluten altogether until you have gotten your blood test done for other grains and have asked your doctor. 

So, how will I know if I have any sensitivity? 

There are 2 ways to diagnose.

1. Get a blood test done. (obvious haha) 

2. Note if you have any of the above symptoms, then avoid gluten/wheat for a few months to see if you feel any different.

Can I avoid gluten because it seems healthy and will I lose weight? 

If gluten/wheat is avoided by a person who doesn't have celiac disease, gluten intolerance, or wheat allergy, it will not affect them at all. In fact, gluten free products are not always healthy because they include a lot of ingredients to make them taste like wheat products. Which means more processed food which is unhealthy. I have been on a gluten/wheat free diet for almost 3 months now.  And, surprisingly I have not lost any weight XD Because we are human, we need calories to survive. I still eat carbs, but just not made of wheat/barley/rye. Please stop going on gluten free diet just because it sounds healthy and seems like a new trend. Because it will not do you any good if you're not suffering from one of the above conditions/symptoms. 

Does it feel any different after 90 days of gluten/wheat free diet?

Yes! It sucks big time when your family member are eating an awesome looking burger or pizza slice, but it is all so worth it. Because I have wheat allergy, I feel different after the diet change.  One of the main results I have seen is that I do not see the rash that I used to get on my wrist. And, I do not have sore throat in the morning which I thought was a normal thing to have every now and then. No headaches, feeling tired all of a sudden after eating hearty meals.

Now, whilst you were reading this, if anything triggered, making you think you have any of the above conditions, I would HIGHLY recommend you to get it checked. Majority of us suffer from these symptoms, but never get to know what actually is happening. I want to spread awareness of hidden allergies that we have, as food is a big part of our lives, and how it makes you feel can leave a huge impact on a daily basis.
